According to Reuters, TikTok CEO Shou Ji Chu said the Chinese short video app firm is at a critical juncture as more US lawmakers seek to ban the popular app over national security concerns.

Chu said in a video posted on TikTok earlier Tuesday that the app currently has more than 150 million monthly active users in the US.

“That means almost half of the US is switching to TikTok,” Chu said. In 2020, TikTok claimed to have 100 million users in the US. Chew’s video has been viewed more than 2.5 million times since it was posted earlier in the day.

Chu, who will testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday, said: “Some politicians have started talking about banning TikTok.”

“Now this can take TikTok away from all 150 million of you,” says the video, with the US Capitol in the background.

He asked TikTok users to comment on what they would like US lawmakers to know about “what you like about TikTok.”

On Wednesday, the creators of TikTok and Rep. Jamal Bowman of New York will hold a press conference outside the US Capitol to oppose the TikTok ban.

Chu also said that 5 million US businesses use TikTok to reach customers.

Critics of TikTok fear that US users’ data could be shared with the Chinese government through the app, which is owned by Chinese tech company ByteDance. TikTok denies allegations of espionage.

On Tuesday, TikTok also said it had updated its community guidelines and provided more details about its plans to protect user data in the US. The company said this month it began removing protected data from US users in data centers in Virginia and Singapore after it began moving new US data to the Oracle Cloud last year.

TikTok said last week that the Biden administration had demanded that TikTok’s Chinese owners divest their stake in the app or face a US ban.
