Concerned by the statement of Romanian Foreign Minister Bohdan Aurescu, who said on Monday in Brussels that the so-called Moldovan language does not exist, but is an artificial construct created by the Soviet Union and then used by Russia for propaganda purposes, the carrier of the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, responded on Tuesday without diplomatic tact, saying that according to this logic, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania can also be called an “artificial construct”, according to News.ro.
“The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Bohdan Aurescu, stated that the Moldovan language never existed, it was artificially created during the Soviet period. Mr. Bohdan Aurescu also never existed, but eventually he was created. Can it now be called an “artificial structure”? – wrote Maria Zakharova in her Telegram account on Tuesday.
She even insults the head of Romanian diplomacy, continuing: “Unlike the Romanian minister, the Moldovan language is an important phenomenon in world history.”
In addition, Zakharova states that “Moldovan language is older than Romanian” and refers to her other Telegram post published on Saturday, March 18, when she reacted to the statement of the Romanian Foreign Ministry welcoming the reception in Chisinau. laws regarding the “Romanian language”.

According to the explanations of Maria Zakharova, the Romanian language and the Moldovan language are really similar, but “they are different dialects”. The dubious arguments that Zakharova continues to make end with the clear conclusion that the Romanian language should be renamed Moldovan, since the latter is older than Romanian.
- “There has long been a consensus in historical linguistics about the Moldavian and Romanian languages. They are indeed similar, but they are different dialects. The Moldavian language is the ancient language of the Moldavian people, mentioned in writings from the 17th century. In 1628, the book “Treasures of Chronology” by the German scientist I. Alsted was published, in which the Moldavian language – lingua moldavorum – is mentioned in the table of languages and dialects of the Earth. There are also older references to the Moldavian language, up to the 16th century. And then there was no Romanian language, there was an old Romanian language, which, according to most researchers, is more correctly called the Wallachian language. The true Romanian language was formed only at the end of the 18th century, after the Romanian theologian Samuel Micu-Klein created a rulebook and grammar. In addition, the Moldovan language, as the language of the modern state, is organically a symbol of self-identification of the inhabitants of Moldova, formed in the modern borders since 1940. Rejecting the Moldavian language, the current regime in Chisinau poses the question: whose is Bessarabia now (which was occupied by Romania until 1940) and who owns the lands along the Dniester (which were part of Ukraine until 1940)? Paradoxically, now the Moldovan language has been officially preserved only in Transnistria. If they want to rewrite the name of the language, then follow the historical logic and call the Romanian language Moldovan, and not the other way around,” Zakharova recommended in her Saturday post.
Bohdan Aurescu: “The so-called Moldovan language does not exist”
While in Brussels on Monday, where he participated in the Council of Foreign Affairs of the EU, the head of Romanian diplomacy, Bohdan Aureska, was asked about this reaction of the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow.
“It is not customary for the Minister of Foreign Affairs to comment on the statements of another minister,” Bohdan Aurescu said. He noted that when the Chisinau Parliament made this historic decision, Romania welcomed this very important step. “Because it restores the historical truth related to the official name of the language in the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, this is a gesture of the maturity of society in the Republic of Moldova and commitment to European values. The so-called Moldovan language does not exist, it is an artificial construct created by the Soviet Union and then used by Russia for propaganda purposes,” Bohdan Aurescu was quoted as saying by TVR Moldova.
The project to replace the phrase “Moldovan language” with “Romanian language” in all legislative acts of the Republic of Moldova was adopted last week in the Chisinau Parliament. Thus, in all legislation of the country, the term “Romanian language” will have to replace the phrases “Moldovan language”, “official language”, “state language” and “native language”. At the same time, the state holiday “Our language”, as it is currently called in the Parliament’s decree on commemorative, public holidays and days off and in the Code of Labor Laws, will be renamed to “Romanian language”.
