Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada on Tuesday approved the appointment of a former head of the national railway company to a government post overseeing key industries, as part of a minor reshuffle aimed at strengthening executive power in Kyiv as the country continues to grapple with Russian encroachment. Ukrainian parliamentarians also approved the appointment of Oksen Lisovoy to the post of Minister of Education and Science.

“No less difficult challenges await us: victory in the war, reconstruction, development of modern education, development of Ukrainian science and industry. Therefore, the new members of the government have ambitious goals,” wrote Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal in Telegram.

On February 24 last year, Russia launched an unprovoked and unjustified aggression against neighboring Ukraine. Moscow constantly declares that it is conducting a “special military operation to de-Nazify” the neighboring country and protect the Russian-speaking population of Ukraine.

Kyiv has announced that before discussing a possible peace plan with Moscow, Russian troops must leave the entire territory of Ukraine, including the regions annexed last year and the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.
