
PEN club named the most dangerous country
In 2022, 115 attacks on writers, poets and journalists were recorded, the German PEN Center in Darmstadt reported on Tuesday, March 21, citing data from the parent organization, combined in the so-called Case List-2022.. “Given the situation in hot spots like Ukraine and Iran, it’s easy to lose sight of the repression that writers and journalists face across the world: in Bahrain, Egypt, China or Zimbabwe,” said the international NGO of human rights in an affirmation.
In Belarus, notes PEN, writer and Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialiatski (pictured) was recently sentenced to 10 years in prison “only for founding a human rights organization”. In Turkey, the philanthropist, initiator of cultural projects, the editor Osman Kavala, as well as the politician and writer Selahattin Demirtas remain behind bars, despite requests from the European Court of Human Rights for their release.
Mexico is the world’s most dangerous country for reporters outside active war zones, with 13 journalists killed there in 2022. In Ukraine, war claimed the lives of 15 journalists, according to the PEN Club, citing the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ).
Most attacks on writers, journalists and poets were committed in the Americas, followed by Europe and Central Asia, countries in the Asia-Pacific region and Africa.
