As in the rest of the automotive industry, muscle cars will not escape electrification. A few months ago, Dodge also unveiled the Daytona SRT, a concept that combines the famous Charger and Challenger in an unprecedented way. But before going electric, the American manufacturer paid homage to the V8 with a series of seven models called Last Call.

The last of these special editions Challenger SRT Demon 170an American car built for drag racing.

With an ethanol V8

What immediately impresses is the performance of the 6.2-liter V8: 1039 hp and 1281 Nm without an electric drive. The power that makes 852 hp almost pale. Demon, and which can be achieved by refueling with E85 ethanol. With gasoline with an octane rating of 95 (or higher), it is possible to achieve up to 912 hp. and 1100 Nm.

At maximum power, the Demon 170 overcomes 400 meters from the start 8.91 seconds, with a speed at the end of the run of 244 km/h. But the speed from 0 to 100 km/h is even more impressive 1.66 seconds. The power this Challenger SRT delivers the unofficial title of the fastest car in the worldeven ahead of Aspark Owl, which takes 1.7 seconds in this exercise.

Behind the Dodge are powerful giants such as the Bugatti Chiron, Tesla Model S Plaid and Rimac Nevera, the latter of which accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.85 seconds.

And if you think it’s just a revamped Demon, you’re wrong. Dodge reviewed the entire mechanics of the car. The supercharger increased from 2.7 liters to 3 liters, the throttle body from 92 mm to 105 mm, and the intake pressure from 21.3 psi versus the Demon’s 15.3 psi. The Demon 170 also has a special control unit that determines the exact percentage of ethanol in the mixture. If this percentage exceeds 65%, the engine reveals its full potential.

Power is sent only to the rear wheels and is provided by an eight-speed automatic transmission equipped with TransBrake 2.0, which allows better control of starting from a standstill during a drag race.

Specific equipment

The car comes standard with genuine dragster tires in the rear, namely Mickey Thompson ET Street R 315/50 R17, and smaller 245/55 R18 tires in the front. The choice is designed to improve straight-line performance, but for those who want to use the Challenger every day, Dodge also offers more traditional tires.

Alternatively, aluminum alloy and carbon fiber wheels can be selected to reduce weight by a total of 14kg. As part of the ‘slimming regime’, the Demon 170 has new lighter wheel arches that save a further 8kg, while those who wish can also request the removal of the rear seat, sound-absorbing panels, boot liner and a two-speaker-only audio system.

Of course, those who prefer a minimum of luxury will be offered heated and ventilated leather and Alcantara seats, a heated steering wheel, an 18-speaker audio system and a panoramic roof.

3,300 copies on order… now

Dodge plans to build 3,000 Demon 170s for the United States and 300 for Canada between July and December 2023, with orders closing as early as March 27.

The starting price is 96,666 USD (around €90,000 at the current exchange rate) and each customer will receive a set of whiskey glasses bearing the Demon badge and engraved with the car’s name and chassis number.
