War in Ukraine: Explosion in Crimea destroys Russian missiles

An explosion in the city of Dzhankoy on the Crimean peninsula destroyed Russian missiles transported by rail, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said on Monday.

The Caliber NK missiles were intended for the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the same source reports.

The special services of Kyiv stressed that NK Kalibr are missiles designed to be launched from surface ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The range of such weapons is more than 2,500 thousand kilometers for ground targets and more than 375 kilometers for sea targets.

The attack was aimed at continuing the process of “demilitarizing Russia” and preparing for the liberation of Crimea from Russian occupation, the ministry added.

Kyiv did not explicitly claim responsibility for the attack, and there was no confirmation from the Russian side that the missiles or their types were destroyed.

Sergei Aksyonov, the Moscow-appointed head of the Crimean self-government, said air defense systems shot down Ukrainian UAVs in Dzhankoy.

According to Mr. Aksyonov, one civilian was injured and two buildings were damaged by falling debris.

Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014, which is not recognized by the majority of the international community.
