Modern Inc. expects the price of its COVID-19 vaccine to be around $130 per dose in the U.S. in the future as procurement shifts from the government to the private sector, company chairman Stephen Hoge said, according to Reuters.

“Right now, different customers negotiate different prices, so it’s a little bit more complicated,” Hoge said ahead of a congressional hearing led by Democratic Sen. Bernie Sanders on Moderna’s pricing plans.

Moderna previously said it was considering pricing its COVID vaccine in the range of $110 to $130 per dose in the United States, similar to the range Pfizer Inc said in October it was considering for its rival COVID vaccines. which are sold in partnership with BioNTech.

Hoge said the government’s Medicare health plan for seniors pays $70 for a dose of the seasonal flu shot.

The fact that there have been two to three times more hospitalizations and deaths from COVID than the flu in the last three months alone has become a factor in pricing, Hoge said.

The Biden administration has said the pandemic-related health emergency will end in May, moving to price negotiations with insurers and other buyers, not just the federal government.
