Milan: Raduga families mobilized for their legal recognition

Today in Milan there was a mobilization of the “Rainbow” families demanding their full recognition by Italian law. Human rights organizations took part in the mobilization LGBTthe new leader of the centre-left Democratic Party Elie Schlein, Mayor of Milan Bepe Sala, representatives of the Italian Left and the Five Star Movement.

The main reason for today’s protest was the decision of the Italian Interior Ministry, by which it asked the municipality of Milan to stop registering birth certificates for children of same-sex couples in their registers.

“I heard the stories of these families, I looked into their eyes. There is a legal gap that needs to be filled,” Milan Mayor Beppe Sala said.

For her part, new Democrat leader Eli Schlein added that her party would submit legislation recognizing the rights of same-sex couples and their children, “because no discrimination can continue to exist.”

“There is no reason why the Rainbow families should be persecuted. We are on their side, because what the current government is doing is unacceptable. It is an ideological approach that is out of touch with reality,” said Chiara Apentino, Five Star chief executive and former mayor of Turin.
