Germany’s defense ministry wants to buy 82 civilian Airbus H145M helicopters and convert some of them into combat helicopters to replace its fleet of Tiger attack helicopters, Business Insider reported, citing internal military documents.

Germany changed its defense policy last year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, allocating 100 billion euros to modernize the Bundeswehr, Germany’s armed forces.

Berlin, which has been reluctant to buy Airbus’ more modern version of the Tiger attack helicopter because of operational problems, wants to buy 82 of the planes for 3.05 billion euros and equip 24 of them with anti-tank missiles.

The H-145M helicopters are approved for military use but are not designed as combat aircraft, and the Bundeswehr has concerns about the aircraft’s combat fitness and crew protection that the ministry has so far ignored, the report said.

The Bundeswehr considers the planned purchase “a purely political decision that ignores operational needs,” writes Business Insider, referring to a letter from the Technical Service of Aviation and Aeronautical Equipment of the German Armed Forces (WTD 61) to the Ministry of Defense.
