The Academy of Athens will award three passengers on the fatal Intercity train who, after colliding with a commercial train at Tempi, rescued their fellow travelers from the wreckage.

On Thursday, March 23, at 19:00, the solemn meeting dedicated to the anniversary of March 25, 1821 will be broadcast live on the website of the Academy, where, among other things, the Nicolau Carol Prize of the 3rd degree will be awarded. The Ethics and Political Science Prize will be awarded for an act or act of social virtue and charity to “three young and heroic intercity train passengers” Andreas Alikaniotis, Michalis Clapsy and Angelos Tsiamouras.

As the Academy of Athens notes, three young men, “showing the highest sense of altruism and solidarity, despite being injured themselves, spontaneously rushed to the aid of their helpless, much more seriously injured fellow travelers, literally saving their lives during the train tragedy in Tempi that rocked the Panhellenium on February 28, 2023.”

“It is clarified that, of course, they honor all those who acted accordingly, but, unfortunately, their names were not known, as well as those who participated in the emotional pandemic, on the spot, blood donation in favor of multiple injuries due to a railway tragedy, requiring urgent transfusion of a large amount of blood.

Academician Mr. Alexandros Nekhamas will give a solemn speech on the topic “Paligenesis, Language, Diaspora”.

Thereafter, the 2023 Positive Science Excellence Award will go to Ms. Phoebe Konturi, Professor of Environmental Economics at the Athens University of Economics and Business, for her contribution to the advancement of marine environmental science.
