The Latvian state canceled its decision to “cut” the funding of athletes who compete in the same competitions with representatives of Russia and Belarus.
The decision by the authorities in Riga caused outrage in Latvia, both from the public and from the athletes, who immediately criticized those who decided to punish the athletes for something they cannot control.
The most famous international name involved in the case was that of tennis player Olena Ostapenko, the 2017 Roland Garros champion and currently ranked 25th in the world.
“After assessing the circumstances related to the termination of financing of athletes Elena Ostapenko, Tom Skuins and Kritas Neyland, and after listening to the opinions of the Latvian Cycling Federation and the Latvian Tennis Federation, the Ministry of Education and Research, in cooperation with the Latvian Olympic Committee, prepared changes to the decision to terminate the financial support of the Olympians.
Given the amendments, athletes will continue to receive full funding,” the Latvian Ministry of Education and Research said in a statement.
