Turkey: ‘very likely’ to ratify Finland’s NATO membership by mid-April

Turkish parliament ‘very likely’ to ratify membership request Finland V NATO until mid-April, two Turkish officials said in Reuters on Wednesday, the day before the visit of the President of Finland to the country Sauli Niinistö.

A senior Turkish official even said Reuters that Finland’s request would be approved independently of Sweden.

Sweden and Finland applied to join the Alliance in 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but faced objections from Turkey. Ankara claims that Stockholm provides asylum to members of terrorist groups, which Sweden denies.

It is noted that, apart from Hungary, Turkey is the only member that has not yet given the green light to Finland and Sweden.
