The State Department in Kyiv says it has invited Forida Gov. Ron DeSantis to visit Ukraine to “deal with” the Russian invasion after the US politician, who is running as a contender for the Republican Party’s nomination for the White House, assessed that the defense of Ukraine is not is one of the “vital interests” of the USA and that Washington should not become more involved in the “territorial dispute” between Ukraine and Russia.

Ron DeSantis “knows the difference between a ‘controversy’ and a war.” We invite him to visit Ukraine to better understand the large-scale invasion carried out by Russia and the threats it poses to the interests of the United States,” Oleh Nikolenko, the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. This was reported by the EFE agency, citing Agerpres.

In an interview with Fox News on Monday night, Ron DeSantis expressed an opinion about Ukraine similar to that of his rival from his own party, former President Donald Trump.

“We cannot wage a war abroad that stops short of protecting our own country,” DeSantis said.

“The United States has many vital interests, such as securing our borders, resolving our military readiness crisis, achieving energy security and independence, and establishing control over the economic, cultural, and military power of the Chinese Communist Party, but becoming more involved in the territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia is not among them,” the 44-year-old Republican politician believes.

He also very critically assessed the position taken by the administration of Democratic President Joe Biden Ron DeSantis in this conflict, saying that Washington should not offer “blank checks” to Kyiv.

Looking ahead to the intra-party race for next year’s Republican presidential nominee, a recent poll released by CNN put DeSantis at 39 percent, compared to 37 percent for Donald Trump.

The latter claimed that if he was in the White House, there would be no war in Ukraine. “If I were president, this horrible war would be over in 24 hours or less,” Trump also said on Fox News.
