Exactly 10 years ago, at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, McLaren P1 : this English hybrid hypercar has been billed as “the world’s best road and track car” and is the forerunner of the McLaren Artura in the performance hybrid category.
The McLaren P1 is now celebrating its 10th anniversarythousand anniversary, and still has an impressive technical profile: it combines a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with 737 horsepower and a 179 horsepower electric motor for a total of 916 horsepower.
McLaren P1: Spectacular performance
What to swallow Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 6.8 seconds and 0 to 300 km/h in 16.5 seconds, 5 seconds faster than the McLaren F1, all with a top speed of 350 km/h. McLaren proves with the P1 that hybridization can bring extra soul to its hypercars with instant throttle response and generous engine torque.
But the P1’s performance is also due to the car’s light weight, as well as its aerodynamic design. It is based, in particular, on a carbon monocoque “MonoCage”, which allows displaying an empty mass of only 1395 kg. Body panels made of carbon fiber weigh only 90 kg and are particularly strong.
The hybrid battery, mounted in a low position inside the carbon fiber MonoCage structure, weighs only 96 kg. This philosophy of minimizing weight is also applied to the new McLaren Artura, which is a generously equipped hybrid supercar as standard.
McLaren P1: only 375 copies
In terms of aerodynamics, the McLaren P1’s large rear spoiler optimizes its performance through automatic adjustment. It can slide back up to 300mm on the track and 120mm on the road, and was designed using methods developed by the firm for Formula 1.
Drag Reduction System (DRS) was also incorporated into the McLaren P1 design to reduce downforce and increase straight line speed. At high speeds, the rear wing tilts, creating a downforce of up to 600 kg, at speeds well below the maximum.
The McLaren P1 has been a commercial success since its launch in November 2013 375 copies everything planned has already been used. Production of the first production McLaren P1 ended in September 2013, and the last in the series was completed in December 2015.
