The US State Department has approved the possible sale of 95 light tactical vehicles (JLTVs) and related equipment to Romania, the Pentagon said on Tuesday. Earlier, Romania requested 35 JLTVs, which increased the total sales potential to 129 JLTVs worth up to $104 million, Reuters writes.
Despite the State Department’s approval, it also does not mean that a contract has been signed or that negotiations are over.
The Pentagon said Oshkosh was the prime contractor for the equipment.
According to an article by Defenseromania.ro from the beginning of the year, the American company Oshkosh Defense announced that the US Army Contracting Command – Detroit Arsenal on January 3, 2023 placed an order worth $102 million for JLTV light tactical vehicles, which will be delivered to Romania, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Brazil and Montenegro.
Most likely, the JLTV armored fighting vehicles to be delivered to Romania will be part of the Special Operations Forces (FOS) under a 227 million lei contract, Defenseromania.ro noted at the time.
The cited source writes that Romania will purchase JLTV armored combat vehicles produced by the Americans in Oshkosh, worth approximately 227 million lei including VAT (ie approximately $49 million). Armored vehicles will be part of the equipment of the Special Operations Forces (SSO).
In addition to the JLTV contract for Special Forces, Oshkosh is also offering JLTVs in the Armored and Unarmored All-Wheel Drive Vehicle Supply Program for the Romanian Army.
The Oshkosh JLTV armored vehicle costs between $230,000 and $270,000 and can cost $433,539 with military hardware including anti-tank guided missiles. This means that the Special Operations Forces (SOS) of the Romanian Army can receive about 120-130 JLTV tactical vehicles.
