Hard against success of MG in France and in Europeto realize that the brand went bankrupt a few years ago. Morris Garages was founded in 1924 was once one of the most important brands of the British Leyland consortium. It also included Rover, Jaguar, Austin, Triumph, Land Rover and Mini. But in the 1980s, the consortium ran into a problem great financial crisis. This led to the disappearance of legendary brands. Like Triumph, Austin and Morris, and selling Jaguar and Land Rover. In the late 90s, only MG and Rover remained. They tried one last trick with the new MG Rover group. He did bankruptcy in 2005 due to the aging range and lack of real novelty. Then the brand took it up a long way out of the abyss…
Strong comeback thanks to SAIC
It Chinese state-owned group SAIC, which acquired it in 2006. He was only allowed to enjoy the MG brand, not the Rover brand. Probably because of the clause agreed with Land Rover to use the Rover name. SAIC, however, revived the old Rover models and created a very close brand: Roewe, which distributed the 75 version under the name. In 2009, production of the MG 6 began, but only in the UK. For us, MG has really made a comeback since 2017. The ZS crossover was launched that year. SAIC decided to make the MG its flagship in Europe, the ZS – unlike the MG6 – is since then it has been distributed in most European markets, and in particular in France.
Electrified model range and MG4 on the podium
Since then, MG has paid special attention develop an electrified range. In addition to ZS we find in the electrical range the large Marvel-R SUV, the MG5 wagon and the all-new compact MG4. The only non-electric models are EHS SUV, and the thermal version of the ZS crossover. The brand is very successful in Europe: in 2022, it was the first Chinese car brand, ahead of Polestar and Lynk&Co.
In France for the first two months of the year The MG4 was the brand’s best-selling model ! It secured 0.7% market share, and 1690 registrations. A promising start to its career as it was the only MG model to appear in the top 100 best selling models in France… Therefore, the MG brand has returned to France like never before, and these figures indicate that the revival of the brand has borne fruit. She has no intention of resting on her laurels, MG One and Cyberster roadster planned for the next few months.
