
Two people were killed and nine others were injured when an open semi-trailer crashed into them in the small town of Amki, Quebec. Canadathe police announced yesterday on Monday.
The 38-year-old driver first fled, but later turned himself in to authorities. An investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances of the tragedy, said Hélène St. Pierre, a spokeswoman for the Quebec Provincial Police (Sûreté du Québec, SQ).
According to her, the dead are men aged about 70 and 60 years, two of the victims are in serious condition.
It is not yet clear if the driver deliberately hit the pedestrians. According to local health services, psychologists arrived at the scene to support those affected by shock.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudt tweeted that “his heart goes out to the people of Amka.”
The fatal incident comes a month after a bus driver was charged with murder after he crashed his car into a kindergarten in suburban Montreal, killing two children.
Amky is a small town of about 6,000 people located 415 km northeast of Quebec.
