A Russian lawmaker on Monday introduced a bill aimed at raising the conscription age to 21-30 from the current 18-27, Reuters reports. This measure will be introduced from 2026.
At the end of December, the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Serhii Shoigu, declared the “necessity” of increasing the number of the Russian army to 1.5 million soldiers and raising the age limit for military service in the conditions of the Russian offensive against Ukraine. .
“To ensure the fulfillment of the tasks of ensuring Russia’s military security, it is necessary to increase the number of armed forces to 1.5 million servicemen, of which 695,000 are contract personnel,” Shoigu said at a meeting in the presence of President Vladimir Putin, who said that he “agrees” with these statements.
At that time, Serhii Shoigu also announced that the conscription age would be increased for Russian citizens aged 21-30.
According to the current law, Russians between the ages of 18 and 27 can be conscripted into military service, although both Sergei Shoigu and Vladimir Putin have repeatedly stated that such recruits are not sent to fight in Ukraine. (Agerpress)
