The Chilean took advantage of a single serve drop from the former Roland Garros 2022 finalist to win the first set after a solid performance, 6-4.
Garin also started strongly in the second set, but Ruud stormed back to take the tie-break where the ATP No. 97 won 7-2.
The game lasted two hours.
In the 1/8 finals, Garin will meet the winner of Russian Karen Khachanov (15 ATP) and Spaniard Alejandro Davydovich Fokin (28 ATP).
Indian Wells will be held from March 6-19 on hard and 96 players have started in the two main draws. The contest offers $8,800,000 each for men and women. Titled champions – Taylor Fritz and Iga Svyatek.
