
A major police operation is underway in the German city of Karlsruhe as an attacker is holding hostages at a local pharmacy. The area is blocked.
A government spokesman said early Friday that the operation was still ongoing.
Police do not disclose the number of people inside the pharmacy. However, the authorities are in contact with the perpetrator.

An eyewitness told BILD that the police had asked all nearby shops to close and main roads had been blocked.
The incident took place a day after a deadly attack on a Jehovah’s Witnesses’ church in Hamburg that killed seven people and injured 24.
