The Sekelian National Council again demands the territorial autonomy of the Sekelian Land in a petition addressed to the parliament, the government, and also to the attention of President Klaus Iohannis. In the opinion of the Council, autonomy does not harm the territorial unity and sovereignty of Romania, does not limit the interests of citizens of Romanian nationality and other nationalities in the Sekel land, and does not contradict the Constitution.
The National Council of Secuiesca sent a letter to the parliament and the government on Friday, as well as to inform the head of state, entitled “Petition for the Day of Freedom of Secuiesca”, according to News.ro.
“Today, March 10, 2023, we, the Sekels gathered in Tirgu Mures, and those who stand in solidarity with us at home and abroad, following the path of law and democracy, once again unanimously declare: we demand territorial autonomy for the Sekel region. ! Sequoia’s Freedom Day message: It is not only a day to commemorate the martyrs, but it is also a day to claim our legal rights,” the document reads.
The council believes that “Sekel Land autonomy does not harm the territorial unity and sovereignty of Romania, does not limit the interests of citizens of Romanian nationality and other nationalities of Sekel Land, and does not contradict the country’s Constitution.”
“The autonomy of the Secuiesk Land is the right and effective ability of the autochthonous majority of the historical land to dispose of the prerogatives of self-government and some prerogatives of public law, to assume power under their own responsibility and in the interest of the whole community, an important part of the problems of public interest, in accordance with the principle of subsidiarity. This is also in Romania’s interest. The autonomous region has democratically elected governing bodies located between the state and the community, it exercises the powers of self-government, accordingly it has certain public powers delegated by the state,” the cited document also states.
According to the Sekel National Council, “all this can be achieved only through dialogue, through the free will of the local community, with respect for democratic principles, and through the solidary and constructive cooperation of citizens.”
“For 30 years after accession, Romania has not fulfilled this obligation”
“During its accession to the Council of Europe, Romania undertook to implement recommendation 1201/1993, which became mandatory thanks to this commitment,” the petition also states.
According to her, the mentioned document provides that “in regions where the majority are people belonging to national minorities, they have the right to have appropriate autonomous local administrations or a special status that corresponds to the specific historical and territorial situation and in accordance with the national legislation of the state.” .
“We are all committed to world peace and security in the spirit in which these values are present in several documents of the Council of Europe. Thus, Decision 1334/2003 recommends a system of institutions of territorial autonomy to prevent internal conflicts and improve them. In the 30 years since its accession, Romania has not fulfilled this obligation, and the authorities refuse to engage in dialogue on this issue,” the cited document also states.
Shekels require:
- the creation of an independent administrative region and a development region with special powers called Sekel Land according to the draft law developed by the Sekel National Council!
- complying with the international obligations undertaken by Romania, as well as the will of the Szekler community and Romania to adopt the relevant legal norms before joining the Schengen area.
- for the Government to start negotiations on the status of the Sekelian land with the legal representatives of the Sekelian people, the Sekelian National Council and local authorities in the region!
Also, the signatories of the document are protesting “against repeated attacks on some Hungarian-language educational institutions, oppression of some local authorities in the Sekel region, restrictions on the use of the native language, persecution of national symbols.”
“We demand full and effective equality for all the inhabitants of the Sekel land! Autonomy for the Sekelian land, freedom for the Sekelian people,” the cited document also states.
