Large asteroid could collide with Earth, destroying it for lovers Valentine’s Daybut the year 2046 is predicted by experts.
Asteroid 2023 DW, 50 meters wideit is predicted that it will take more than two decades, maybe even three, to reach our planet.
European Space Agency (ESA) discovered 2023 DW Feb 26 and estimates that it has a 1 in 607 chance of hitting the Earth. In fact, the ESA predicted that an asteroid could potentially hit Earth on February 14, 2046.
The asteroid is estimated to be the length of an Olympic pool, though experts say it could be longer.
Scientists have included 2023 DW in the so-called. “list of dangers” – which includes all those airborne objects that can affect the Earth – and rated it as 1 on the Turin scale – a method developed in 1999 that estimates the risk index of a possible collision of a celestial body with the Earth.
This, according to scientists from the Center for Near-Earth Objects NASAmeans that the asteroid “does not present an unusual level of risk” and “the possibility of a collision is highly unlikely and does not cause public attention or concern.”
However, 2023 DW stands out from the other 1448 asteroids on the hazard list as it is the only asteroid above 0.
The risk of it colliding with Earth is currently “very low,” NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordinating Office confirms.
