Consecration ceremonies for same-sex couples will now be held by the German Catholic Church.
In particular, the Synodal Assembly, which is engaged in church reform, approved on Friday in Frankfurt a document allowing same-sex couples to receive blessings from the German Catholic Church.
Of the 202 members of the Synodal Assembly, 176 voted, 14 against and 12 abstained.
Allowing blessing ceremonies for same-sex couples has been one of the key demands of the reform of the German Catholic Church, which has been underway since 2019.
According to the German Catholic News Agency (KNA), the blessing will also be allowed for those who are in a civil marriage.
According to DW, instructions have already been sent to the Conference of German Bishops and the Central Committee of German Catholics to “develop and introduce appropriate liturgical rites in a timely manner.”
