Cameras: what to expect in 2023? News from Auto Plus in your smartphone News from Auto Plus in your mailbox

The beginning of this year 2023 has been a blow for the French government: indeed, the social crisis is more urgent than ever, against the background of the pension reform, the challenge of low emission zones (ZFE) or even the increase in the number of radars.

Trying to defuse this social “bomb”, the Government seems to want to slow down certain topics, including cameras… But for long? This is a really delicate topic, and first of all a political one. Here’s what to expect in 2023.

Cameras: postponements, delays… Latest decisions for today

Arrival city speed cameras was planned for March 2023, but it seems that their deployment has been postponed: officially it is about the continuation of the test phase ” to be confident [de leur] works well ». But it would seem that the real reason is rather political. Indeed, last January, the Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanen, stated this “The number of radars placed by the administration […] will remain stable in 2023”.

It is currently being tested in seven municipalities anti-noise radars should be fined for vehicles that are too loud. A technical problem we should hear about again before the end of 2023, when the experiment could be extended to the whole of France if it proves successful. THE speed cameras for car sharing should be put into operation in 2024, on the occasion of the Olympic Games.

THE ZFE radars were, for their part, planned for the second half of 2024. For this purpose, a tender should have been announced last January, but it has not yet been published. In the midst of the pension reform crisis, it seems the government wants to delay it before restarting the project. However, opposition to the ZEP continues to grow, as evidenced by the various cities that are moving back. Therefore, in the absence of automated verbalization, it will be difficult to enforce compliance with these famous ZFEs.

Radar: placement of stationary radar vehicles

The delegation of radar machines to private companies is carried out in no less than eight regions of France. In the last five, this will probably not happen in 2023: after all, there have been no tenders in this direction. We’ll probably have to wait until next year to hear about it again…

But don’t get too excited: other speed cameras continue to operate across the country. This is, for example, a case autonomous and site radarsproductivity leaders: 280 running today, including about fifty new devices since the beginning of the year.

THE automated parking control is also progressing, much to the chagrin of motorists: The State Council recently confirmed the legality of the process, prompting cities to begin. Unfortunately, video verbalizationalso works very successfully in a hundred municipalities, followers of the sanction on an industrial scale.

Finally, the Minister of the Interior confirmed that it would be soon termination of withdrawal of points for exceeding the speed of less than 5 km/h. However, the dates have not yet been announced: could the Government use this “joker” on the eve of the vote on the pension reform? To be continued…
