A ban on private jets, which French environmentalists will defend in parliament on April 6, aims to “return the rich to the land” by forcing them to contribute to the green transition, lawmaker Julien Bayou said on Thursday, AFP reported.

“This is the measure that punishes people the least, but gives the maximum effect for the climate and the atmosphere,” argued the environmentalist, who will present the bill together with his colleague Christine Arrighi, during a press conference.

The two elected officials listed “staggering numbers” for the impact of private jets, with “ten times more polluting than an airliner” for each passenger. “We have people flying from Cannes to Nice in the summer to avoid the congestion on the coast,” Arrighi said.

“So it’s really about putting the rich back on the land and getting them to agree to a common effort” on the environmental transition, said Julien Bayeu, suggesting that majority MPs would be willing to vote for his text to “send a different signal than being tough “. on the weak” after unemployment insurance and pension reform.

The ban will apply to “non-commercial non-scheduled passenger air transport”, as well as non-scheduled public air transport “carrying fewer than 60 passengers”.
