Tempi: Androulakis’ question to the European Commission on Railway Safety

The President of PASOK – Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis, asked the European Commission several questions regarding the tragic train accident in Tempi.

Even before the tragic accident in Tempi that claimed the lives of dozens of young people and students, Greece, according to the latest two biennial reports (2022, 2020) on railway safety and interoperability in the EU by the European Union Railway Agency (ERA) ) consistently ranked first in terms of deaths per railway kilometer.

Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/6 of 5 January 2017 provides for the installation and development of the European ERTMS rail traffic management system in Greece and the completion of the project at the Tempe accident site as soon as possible. as of 2020 (on the Domokos-Thessaloniki section). But according to reports, Greece applied to the European Commission in March 2022 and received a three-year extension.

The commission is asked:

1. For what reasons did the Greek government demand a three-year delay?

2. Why did the European Commission accept the request of the Greek government, if according to the ERA reports Greece has the highest death rate per railway kilometer?

3. What security improvement projects on the Greek railway network have been financed from the European budget during the current and previous program periods, when were they due to be completed and at what stage are they currently?
