365.4 million for Falirikos Ormos

Inclusion in the NSRP regeneration of Falyrikos Ormos they announced yesterday Ministry of Development And Region Attica. The project is included as a “bridge” between the current and new NSRF with a total budget of 365.4 million euros. What has not yet been announced is when the remaining projects will finally be put up for auction.

According to yesterday’s announcement, the restoration of Faliriko Ormos has been included in the Transport Infrastructure, Environment and Sustainable Development operational program. Interestingly, the first 110.4 million euros are included in the budget of this NPF, which “closes” in accounting at the end of the year, so the amount refers to already completed first phase projects that were covered by the NSF. Attica region.

“With today’s signature, there is now no doubt funding for the completion of the project, the ‘flagship’ project of the European Commission, which will be built according to the principles of the new European Bauhaus: sustainability, aesthetics and inclusiveness. . This particular project is the largest metropolitan park to be built in the European Union,” Attica Regional Governor Giorgos Patoulis said yesterday in a statement. What — Mr. Patulis did not mention is the most important thing, which is when the projects will be announced, the fate of which has been ignored in recent years. According to the information, efforts are being made during this period to finalize some of the changes that will give the project the identity of the “New European Bauhaus” so that they can be included in the tender documentation.

It is recalled that infrastructure projects that began construction in 2017 are completed (after numerous extensions and budget increases) during this period. As the Region clarified yesterday in a statement, the next contract will include all remaining projects as determined by a 2014 presidential decree. This is the creation of a capital park, the construction of about 4000 sq.m. new buildings and 31,000 sq.m. underground parking spaces, completion of footbridges and construction of port facilities such as jetties, islets and beach formations.

Since the 60s

It should be noted, however, that the request for the revival of the territory begins in the 60s, and in the last 20 years it has been at the center of many unsuccessful plans: from turning it into a metropolitan park with an aquarium, in the period before the Olympic Games, to a proposal to turn it into cruise port.

The “salvation” of the area was ensured by the construction of the Cultural Center of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation on the site of the old hippodrome in Kallithea. In fact, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation funded the restoration studies of Faliriko Ormos, led by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano, to harmonize with the design of the Cultural Center. However, local communities (municipalities of Moscato and Kallithea) have repeatedly expressed their indignation at the delay in the implementation of projects.
