After an authoritatively controlled first set, the Romanian, ranked 147th in the world, cruised to a 6-1 victory, taking advantage of three missed serves by Martinsova.
The second set started weaker for the Russians, with two missed serves, and the player from the Czech Republic led 3:0. Making a great comeback, the Romanian ended up winning 6-4.
The game lasted an hour and 10 minutes.
Gabriela Ruse will fight for a place in the main draw with the winner between the Spanish Christina Buksa (90 WTA) and the Russian Erika Andreeva (127 WTA).
Indian Wells will be held from March 6 to 19 on hard, with 96 players in each of the two main draws. The contest offers $8,800,000 each for men and women. Titled champions – Taylor Fritz and Iga Svyatek.
