Hyundai wants to produce hydrogen from plastic
Production of hydrogen from plastic? If at first glance it seems strange, then it is quite real. The process consists of grinding plastic waste and then using a high-temperature chemical process to extract hydrogen from it. This pyrolysis technique allows you to extract a significant part of the hydrogen that is naturally contained in the plastic. Indeed, the hydrogen contained in plastic is equivalent to approximately 15-20% of its weight. Considering the huge amount of plastic waste that is incinerated every year, the amount of hydrogen produced can be very large.
Operating processing plant of 2026
Hyundai Engineering plans to build a 96,167 m² plastics processing plant at the Songsan 2 General Industrial Complex in Danjin. The company signed an agreement to purchase an industrial complex in Danjin-si last July. She wants to start commercial production in 2026 year and aims to produce 24,000 tons of hydrogen per year from 134,000 tons of recycled plastic.
