Ukrainian soldiers fighting on the Bakhmut front charge that they have to face continuous waves of bombings and attacks, some of them claiming that they are not protected by the military leadership in Kyiv, reports The Kyiv Independent, as cited by Agerpres.
This is stated in the material made in this city in the east of the country based on the testimony of more than 10 Ukrainian military personnel.
The quoted Ukrainian military describes the front as a “meat grinder” due to the large number of casualties on both sides. Poorly trained and prepared battalions were thrown to the front line “to do the best they could” with little support from artillery, armored vehicles, mortars, drones or tactical intelligence, Ukrainian infantrymen told the Kyiv Independent.
“We did not receive any support,” says a soldier named Serhiy, who fought on the Bakhmut Front.
Others say that Russian artillery, infantry fighting vehicles and enemy armored personnel carriers often attack Ukrainian positions for hours or days at a time, with Ukrainian heavy weapons unable to stop them.
According to Ukrainian mass media, some of them complained about the lack of coordination and knowledge of the situation on the front lines on the part of the top military leadership, acknowledging the acute shortage of ammunition. Some of them say they have to use World War II weapons.
Ukrainian military personnel in Bakhmut talk about the slim chances of survival
Drones, which are supposed to provide vital intelligence, are also few and far between and are being lost in very high proportions in some areas of the battlefield, soldiers told the quoted publication. All this leads to an extremely large number of dead and wounded.
“Our battalion arrived in mid-December, there were 500 of us between the platoons,” says Boris, a military doctor from the Odesa region who is fighting in the Bakhmut area.
“Last month there were only 150 of us,” he told Kyiv Independent journalists.
“When you go into a position, there’s not even a 50/50 chance you’re going to get out (alive),” claims another soldier. According to him, the chances are “more like 30/70”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi acknowledged the difficult situation of his army near Bakhmut, a stronghold whose control would allow the Russians to create a safe corridor in eastern Ukraine for the transfer of soldiers and weapons.
According to a Ukrainian military official quoted by ISW, Russian forces did not cross the Bakhmutka River in the central part of the city on Saturday, but Russian military bloggers claim that the Wagner pushed Ukrainian positions into the center of Bakhmut.
It is still unclear whether Ukrainian troops intend to maintain their positions on the right bank of the Bakhmutka, ISW reports in a daily update.
