The Porsche 911 will undoubtedly be one of the last, if not the last, Porsche model to go electric. There are many reasons, but the one the brand cites generally remains the same: battery weight.

But if the 911 is to survive, Porsche will probably have to electrify it one day. And it will start with this generation of 992, which, technically, is planned to receive a hybridization system. But let’s say it will be primarily in the service of productivity.

The most powerful of the 911 series arrives

Our British colleagues at Autocar have just provided new information about the upcoming hybrid 911. It will the most extreme and powerful serial 911 in historyand it will appear in 2026, probably at the end of the 992’s life cycle.

According to the first rumors, it could be the basis of the car technologies used in competitionstarting with the 963 LMDh, a single-seater used in the endurance championship.

The future GT2 RS will be equipped with a power plant with a small hybridization, the thermal engine will be assisted by a small electric unit capable of providing additional traction during certain phases of the movement. On the other hand, the car can develop in fully electric mode for very short distances, which would make it not a micro-hybrid car, but a hybrid.

Several sources at Porsche have already announced over 700 hp. and a couple “Much higher” than the 750Nm of the old GT2 RS, which, remember, had a twin-turbo 3.8-litre six-cylinder engine with 700bhp, making it the most powerful production 911 to date, despite its 2018 launch.

Nurburgring record in sight

The Porsche 911 GT2 RS has always been distinguished by its lightness. According to a British magazine, Porsche is already working on it and expecting it the entire electrical system will add only 100 kg to the car compared to the current generation.

A small battery, which will be charged only by braking, will be placed behind the seats, and the electric motor will be inserted at the level of the gearbox. This configuration will transfer the weight distribution to the rear axle: 39% of the weight on the front axle and 61% on the rear. The driving experience shouldn’t be too different from other GT2s.

This decision will certainly serve as the basis for a new generation of engines that will be offered on future 911s, even less powerful ones. Once on the market, we wouldn’t be surprised to see this Porsche take part in a Nürburgring record attempt to dethrone the Mercedes-AMG One.
