“The words of the Pope are an important call to all relevant institutions. As a government, we accept them and continue to make every effort necessary to fight human traffickers and stop loss of life at sea,” Meloni said.

It is noted that earlier, referring to the tragic shipwreck in Calabria, where at least seventy-one immigrants and refugees died a week ago, Pope Francis, addressing the faithful, emphasized:

“I once again call for such tragedies not to be repeated. The actions of slave traders must be stopped, they must not continue to decide the fate of so many innocent people. May the journeys of hope never again turn into journeys of death. May the clear waters of the Mediterranean never again bleed from such dramatic events.”
