Estonia: Decisive Election Amid Russian Invasion of Ukraine

According to public opinion polls, he is expected to win 24-30%, and far-right ECRE 14-25% (in 2019 it won 17.8% of the vote). The Center Party is predicted by 16-19%, the Estonia 200 liberals by 9-15%, the Social Democrats (SDE) by 8-11.5% and the centre-right Batkivshchyna party by 7-9%.

Estonia, a country of 1.3 million people bordering Russia, is a member of the European Union and NATO. Last year, he led international calls for more military aid to Ukraine. Tallinn’s military aid to Kyiv currently exceeds 1% of Estonia’s GNP and is the largest of any other country in relation to the size of its economy.

“My main opponent believes that we should not support Ukraine, that we should pursue only our own interests,” Prime Minister Kallas said in an interview she gave to Agence France-Presse (AFP) last week.

According to the head of EKRE Martin Helme, Estonia “should not aggravate tensions even more” in relations with Moscow. The far-right party focused its campaign on ending military aid to Kyiv and called for no more refugees from Ukraine.

Frustrated by the aggressive stance of the Estonian government towards Moscow, many Russian speakers (which makes up almost 1/4 of the population) are likely to choose to abstain in today’s parliamentary elections.even if they don’t support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

But according to a recent poll, only 11% of Russian-speakers who dared to vote say they will elect EKRE, 45% preferred the centrists, and 35% are undecided.

Today’s parliamentary elections show that Estonia is in a difficult economic situation, and inflation (18.6%) is one of the highest in the European Union.
