WASHINGTON. A South Carolina jury found former lawyer Alex Murdo guilty of killing his wife and son Paul after a highly publicized trial in which the defendant maintained his innocence. The jury found Murdoch guilty, who was sentenced to life in prison, it was announced yesterday afternoon.
Murdoch, 54, has been in state prison since October 2021, initially on fraud charges after embezzling millions of dollars in compensation for the death of domestic workers. Prosecutors, who have since charged Murdoch with involuntary manslaughter, have alleged that the lawyer shot his wife and son to divert attention from his financial crimes. Although the convict maintained his innocence to the end, he never directly denied that he had killed his wife and child. The Murdo family enjoys favorable treatment from the local police, hiding their wrongdoing for three generations.
“Murdo County”
Family members served as Attorneys General of South Carolina, maintaining their influence through the family law firm. Murdo’s family law firm specialized in awarding monetary damages to companies, and the firm’s reputation was such that most defendants opted for out-of-court settlements and monetary damages to avoid lawsuits. Hampton County, where the Murdo family lived, was referred to by residents as “Murdo County”.
Other suspicious deaths
Lawyer Alex Murdoch, descendant of a wealthy family in the American South, has launched a killing spree to cover up his financial crimes.
However, the ex-lawyer’s conviction did not answer the question about the suspicious deaths of two of Murdoch’s employees, housekeeper Gloria Slatterfield and Stephen Smith, in 2018 and 2015 respectively, which were attributed to Alex Murdoch.
The shooter’s wife, 52-year-old Maggie, was shot five times with a hunting rifle, and 22-year-old Paul Murdo was killed by two shrapnel shots. Both victims died instantly.
Between the murders and the arrival of the police, Murdo made sure to create an alibi by calling his already dead wife from his mother’s house a few hundred yards away. The prosecution proved that the lawyer killed his wife and son, traveled to his bedridden mother’s home, and on his return called the authorities, claiming that the victims had been killed by an unknown assailant.
License revocation
Last summer, Murdoch lost his license to practice law after he was prosecuted for multiple financial crimes that netted him a total profit of $8.8 million. Murdoch then claimed to have embezzled the money to satisfy his opioid addiction.
