Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu allegedly visited the command headquarters of a group of troops stationed in Ukraine, writes The Guardian.
The information was also published by the Russian state agency TASS with reference to the statement of the Ministry of Defense.
- “The Minister of Defense of Russia, General of the Army Serhiy Shoigu, inspected the command post of the Vostok group unit in the south of Donetsk during a military special operation.
- At the checkpoint, Shoigu received a report from the commander of the group, Colonel General Rustam Muradov, and staff officers about the current development of events and the actions of the troops,” the Ministry of Defense in Moscow claims.
In a video published by the ministry, Shoigu can be seen being awarded Russian military medals and touring the destroyed city with the district commander, Colonel Rustam Muradov.
Russia’s top military commanders have rarely visited the front line in Ukraine since Russia invaded the country a year ago, The Guardian notes.
In December, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu claimed to have visited “Russian forward positions” in Ukraine, but the official was actually 80 kilometers from the front line, in Crimea, a peninsula illegally annexed by Russia in 2014, Radio Vilne reported. Shoigu, who has been defense minister since 2012, has been heavily criticized for his actions during the war and last month was accused of “high treason” by the head of Wagner’s team, Yevgeny Prigozhin.
