About 10,000 Russian soldiers voluntarily surrendered to the Ukrainian army through the “I want to live” hotline, the Coordination Command for the Treatment of Prisoners of War in Ukraine reported, Kyiv Independent writes.
Launched in September 2022 by the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, a 24-hour “hotline” allows Russians to voluntarily surrender or surrender their units to the Ukrainian military. Russian servicemen are detained in accordance with the Geneva Convention.
In addition to the hotline, there is also a chatbot and a Russian-language website of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine with information about the program.
According to the report, 14 million people have visited the website since its launch. Most of them are families of Russian military personnel, despite the fact that the Russian government blocked the site in mid-October.
In December 2022, the representative of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense Andriy Yusov reported that the hotline received a total of 1.7 million calls, and more than 100 people called every day.
