This year’s winter was the warmest for Northern Greece and the third warmest for the rest of the country, according to a network of 53 weather stations from the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr, operating since 2010.
In particular, Florina recorded the largest positive deviation in the average maximum winter temperature (+2.9 degrees Celsius), followed by Kilkis, Lemnos, Trikala and Thessaloniki with positive deviations of more than 2 degrees, and in Athens the deviation was 0.8 points. In all geographical divisions, more than 60 days (out of 90 winter days) were recorded with temperatures above seasonal.
As for the country’s mountains, the ten meteorological stations of the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr operate at altitudes of over 1,500 meters and provide a real-time picture of conditions in some of Greece’s coldest regions. Their data shows that the lowest minimum temperatures between December 2022 and February 2023 were recorded in the Vatistolo-Parnas (-23.9 degrees) and Sessi-Parnas (-20.7) sinkholes.
The longest continuous period of complete frost (a day when the temperature is constantly negative) occurred in Cecy Parnassus and amounted to 22 consecutive days. Although several weather stations have recorded several days of complete freezing, the number of such days this winter is well below the average of recent years. The example of the highest network station in Greece is characteristic. Kaimaktsalan, where only 34 days of complete frost were recorded (most after January 9), while the average for 2009-2022 was 53 days of complete frost in winter.
