USA: Detention of a man who went to the airport with an explosive device in his suitcase

A man has been detained in Pennsylvania who went to the airport with an explosive device in his luggage, US authorities said on Wednesday.

“The device was discovered during a routine baggage check” on Monday at Lehigh Valley International Airport in the eastern United States, the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said in a press release.

“The suitcase sounded an alarm as it entered the baggage screener,” prompting a TSA agent to check the contents, the press release said.

After examining the cylindrical object inside the suitcase, the FBI concluded that it was indeed an active explosive device containing gunpowder, similar to that used to make fireworks, according to an FBI report obtained by the Axios news site.

The suitcase also contained a package of butane, a gas used primarily as a fuel, a lighter and a pipe with residual white powder, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

The suspect, identified by police as Mark Muffley, was scheduled to fly to Orlando, Florida.

Mr Muffley left the airport on Monday after hearing the public address system calling him to the security desk. A few hours later he was detained by the police.
