Russian troops on Tuesday continued their week-long campaign to encircle and capture the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, where the commander of Ukrainian ground forces described the situation as “extremely tense,” Reuters reported.

The capture of Bakhmut, the site of some of the bloodiest fighting of the war, would be Russia’s first major victory in more than six months and pave the way for the capture of Donetsk Oblast’s last urban centers, one of four remaining. that Moscow claims annexation as part of its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Putin asks the special services to prevent sabotage

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday ordered the FSB security service to step up security in four regions currently only partially controlled by his forces and counter what he called growing espionage and sabotage operations against Russia by Ukraine and the West.

His warnings came after the Russian region’s governor said a drone crashed near a gas station on Tuesday in an apparently botched attack near the city of Kolomna, just 110 km southeast of Moscow.

Ukraine has not publicly claimed responsibility for the attacks from inside Russia. If they are behind the incident in Kolomna, it would be the closest attempted drone strike to the Russian capital since Russia invaded Ukraine just over a year ago.

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry also accused Ukraine of two attempted drone strikes in two regions of southern Russia overnight, but said they did not cause any damage.
