Lukashenka backed Chinese “peace plan” for Ukraine
Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko has declared his full support for the Chinese position paper on the war in Ukraine. Belarus “fully supports the international security initiative you have put forward,” he said during a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on Wednesday, March 1.
Lukashenka’s three-day state visit to China comes at a “difficult time that requires new and extraordinary approaches and reasonable political decisions”, the Belarusian leader was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency. “They must aim, first of all, to avoid falling into a global confrontation in which there will be no winners,” Lukashenka added.
Expand military cooperation
Earlier, Lukashenka met in Beijing with the Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, Li Keqiang. It is expected that on March 2, during the visit, issues of Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine and closer military cooperation will be discussed, reports the dpa.
Furthermore, Lukashenka hopes that the visit will result in Chinese investments in the Belarusian economy. “We are getting acquainted with new technologies in China that we are interested in. This applies to all industries – from biotechnology to national defense,” he told Xinhua news agency ahead of his visit. According to Chinese data, trade between the two countries grew 33% last year, reaching US$ 5 billion.
China’s “Peace Plan”
On February 24, the anniversary of the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a document titled “China’s Position on the Political Solution of the Ukraine Crisis”. It was met with disappointment by the international community as it contains no new initiatives to end hostilities. On the contrary, China has shown continued support for the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin, recalls the AFP agency.
