About 600 cases were called for treatment in Patras during the three days of the carnival. Only on Sunday night, more than 300 people were recorded, of which four remained in hospitals.
Most of the cases were cases of intoxication, followed by minor injuries, breathing problems, substance use and panic attacks.
The hospitals, EKAV, the Medical Centers of the North and South Sectors and the Patras Branch of the ECHS managed, within the framework of the cooperation that they have established under the coordination of the commander of the 6th Medical District, Yannis Karvelis, to effectively cover all incidents. that arose, and only four required hospitalization.
“The results show that the mechanism we developed worked effectively. Tomorrow we will have a meeting of all the agencies with which we have collaborated to evaluate our project and the work of the project. The aim is to point out any negative points, although everything indicates that this plan should be a guideline for reporting relevant events,” Yiannis Karvelis, commander of the 6th sanitary district, told pelop.gr.
⦁ In two hospitals, “Agios Andreas” and the University Hospital of Patras, more than 400 cases in total passed through the emergency departments (ED), which were not only from the carnival. Incidents of minor injuries, substance use, etc. have been carried over from the carnival.
⦁ In particular, on Sunday evening, 15 patients were transferred to the Agios Andreas Surgical ICU and the same number to the PGNP Surgical ICU on the same day.
⦁ EKAV was able to transfer cases to both medical centers (Agios Alexios and Zarouhleikon), so there was not much pressure on the hospitals.
⦁ The department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, created in the upper part of Georgiou Square by the emergency forces, played a decisive role. Mr. Karvelis additionally equipped this unit with defibrillators, wound sutures and other necessary equipment from hospitals, as well as doctors, so that incidents can be dealt with on the spot.
⦁ Hospitalizations were very limited, as they did not exceed four people.
“In addition to the above data, it should be added that the neighboring hospitals of Pyrgos, Agrinio and Mesolongio also worked very well. We agreed to avoid transfers for three days so that there is no unnecessary workload in Patras hospitals, and EKAV has its own units for Patras,” Mr. Karvelis explained.
“The main thing is that the specific planning that we did made it possible to avoid people’s suffering. Anyone who needed help received it immediately. All fronts worked smoothly, so we avoided grumbling. At this point, we must publicly thank the EES, the local chapter and its volunteers, who worked in a well-organized manner,” he concluded.
