Russian President Vladimir Putin has not yet made it clear whether he will run again in the country’s presidential elections scheduled for 2024, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Mr. Putin is not thinking about the upcoming election campaign right now, he is too busy with current issues, Mr. Peskov explained in statements published by the Izvestia newspaper on Tuesday.
“We have not yet heard him say anything about whether he will run or not,” the Kremlin spokesman said, adding that “it’s still a little early.”
Vladimir Putin, who ordered the Russian army to invade Ukraine in the early hours of February 24, 2022, was Russian President from 2000 to 2008 and has been re-elected since 2012.
By virtue of an amendment to the Russian Constitution, he is legally entitled to run again next year. He could potentially be president until 2036.
There have been instances in the past when Mr. Putin was late in his candidacy, although there was little doubt that he intended to hold on to power.
