The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, recently mentioned in his written message. in a shipwreck off the coast of Calabria and which, according to preliminary estimates, cost the lives of 45 immigrants and refugees.

“I mourn the dead, I express my closeness to the shipwrecked, to whom we must guarantee proper reception, and I want to thank the rescuers,” the Italian President stressed.

At the same time, Sergio Mattarella asked for efforts to address the causes of migration flows such as war, poverty, persecution, terrorism and the effects of climate change.

“It is all the more necessary for the European Union to take responsibility for the concrete management of the phenomenon of migration, finally, in order to remove its control from traffickers, making direct efforts in the field of migration policy and supporting cooperation for the development of countries from which these young people are forced to leave due to lack of prospects.

According to Italian media, one of the slave traders who organized this trip of more than two hundred immigrants and refugees was recently arrested in Calabria, which ended in tragedy.
