Mohammad Ibrahim Bazzi, 58, who was designated a “global terrorist” by the United States in 2018 when a $10 million bounty was offered for information on his whereabouts, has funneled millions of dollars to Hezbollah in Lebanon over the years, U.S. authorities told an Israeli newspaper. .

U.S. Attorney Breon Peace in Brooklyn said the extradition of Bazzi and 78-year-old Lebanese national Talal Chahin was sought based on the charges contained in an indictment filed last month in federal court in Brooklyn.

“Mohammad Bazzi believed he could secretly move hundreds of thousands of dollars from the United States to Lebanon without being detected by law enforcement,” Peace said in a statement. “Today’s arrest proves Bazzi wrong.”

The charges against Bazzi and Shaheen include conspiracy to induce American citizens to engage in illegal transactions with a global terrorist and conspiracy to launder money. It was unclear who would represent the men when they arrived in the United States.

Daniel J. Kafafian, acting chief of the New Jersey Drug Enforcement Administration, said the defendants “seeked to provide ongoing financial assistance to Hezbollah, a foreign terrorist organization responsible for death and destruction.”

Romanian authorities took Bazzi into custody after he arrived in Bucharest on Friday, according to a press release announcing his arrest.
