The unruly nature of the Andean bear has caused trouble for the staff of the St. Louis Zoo.
Four-year-old Ben, who escaped from his habitat on February 7, did so again on Thursday night. After wandering free for about 50 minutes, he was “captured” and taken back to his cage, where “new security measures” were put in place.
Zookeepers attributed his first escape to a wire snagging on the steel mesh of his enclosure.
To prevent this from happening again, they “made his habitat even safer by adding steel clamps to the mesh.” However, this was not enough for the enterprising Ben.
In the second case, zoo security protocol was activated immediately and the animal returned to the enclosure in less than an hour. The operation to “capture” was faster than the operation on February 7, which lasted more than 1.5 hours.
The zoo said it now acknowledges that “Ben is young and adventurous and will continue to look for alternative ways to protect his space.”
Andean bears are only found in South America, but they are a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and the threat of poaching.
