Georgios Romaios of Theodoros (April 14, 1934 – February 24, 2023) was a Greek journalist, writer and politician. He was director of the newspaper To Vima, CEO of ERT, MP, MEP, Vice President of the European Parliament and Minister for PASOK.

He was born in the ice of Corfu. He studied economics at the then Higher School of Economics and Commercial Sciences (HSEiN).

He was professionally engaged in journalism in the newspaper “To Vima”, in which until 1981 he successively held the positions of parliamentary editor, political editor, editorial director and, finally, director.

In the case of the murder of Grigoris Lambrakis, he conducted a very important investigation.

During the dictatorship, in 1971, he was arrested and imprisoned for seven months for his involvement with PAC Andreas Papandreou.

Between 1976 and 1978 he was Vice President of the Union of Athens Daily Newspaper Editors (ESHEAA).

Political career

In 1981, with the election of PASOK to the government, he was appointed Director General of ERT, a position he held until 1984, when he was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for PASOK (he was re-elected in the 1989 European elections). ).

With the return of Andreas Papandreou to power in 1993, he was appointed Deputy Minister of National Economy (October 13, 1993 – May 4, 1994) and then Deputy Minister of National Economy (May 4, 1994 – September 15, 1995) .

In 1994, at the 3rd PASOK Congress, he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Movement, and on September 15, 1995, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs until January 1996 and until the resignation of Andreas Papandreou.

In the 1996 elections he was elected as a Member of the Parliament of Athens and served as Minister of Public Order until October 1998. As Minister of Public Order, he was initially successful, but his tenure ended badly with the Sorin Mattei affair.

Georgios Romaios was awarded the medal of the International Organization of Journalists (in Prague in 1971), as well as the gold medal of the Greek Red Cross. He was married to Maria Hatsopoulou and lived permanently in Athens.
