“Both from the position of the government, and today, as the party of the official opposition in Greece, we have fought to advance the prospect of a just and sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem within the framework of the Bi-Zonal Bi-Communal Federation. We will continue to fight these battles for the benefit of the Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, who, after so many years, are entitled to a new perspective on their lives,” SYRIZA-PS President Alexis Tsipras emphasized in a statement at the Nicosia Central Restaurant, where gg AKEL member Stefanos Stephanou hosted a dinner for the official leader of the Greek opposition and his associates.
Regarding the results of the Cypriot elections, he noted that despite the fact that the AKEL-supported candidate failed to be elected, the result is a very significant surprise, but also that the ballot box is the one that shows real correlations, and not opinion polls.
Al. Tsipras spoke of a period of great geopolitical instability, but also of momentum, which he said also concerns Greek-Turkish relations. “The deadly earthquake and this great calamity in Turkey is changing, I think, the climate between nations, anyway, because non-nations have something to share. However, the prospect is emerging to change the agenda of the debate on the resolution of Greek-Turkish disputes on the basis of international law, with clear red lines, but with the prospect of resolving disputes in the Hague Court, on the basis of international law, but also to resume negotiations on the Cyprus issue from the point where where we left them in Crans-Montana, and based on the Guterres framework.”
He concluded by saying that the search for justice and the elimination of inequality must continue, “because, let’s not forget that this is the role of progressive forces, this is the role of the left.”
For his part, the gc from AKEL, Stefanos Stephanou, welcomed Al. Tsipras said that he is always glad to communicate with the President of SYRIZA-PS. on matters of mutual interest and general matters of interest to the left.
“This period is full of events, problems, dead ends, to which the left is called upon to give convincing answers, declaring its presence in the small and big struggle of our peoples for a better world, for a better society, for peace in our long-suffering region, cooperation between the countries of nations”, – said Mr. Stefan.
“AKEL, as an opposition party, will continue to fight resolutely, with responsibility, with patriotism for the good of our country and our people,” he added and ended, according to him, with the wish that the fighting in SYRIZA in Greece should be effective.
Before lunch with St. Stephen, Al. Tsipras met with EDEK President Marino Sizopoulos.
