According to the Municipality of Athens, for a full 25 years, the Maraslei schools – one of the most historic school complexes in the country – have been the subject of a dispute between the Municipality of Athens and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA), as it was impossible to agree even on who they belong to. and who has jurisdiction over them.

The dispute, which was taken to court, even reaching the extreme point of the issue of the residence of the schools, was resolved thanks to a landmark agreement between the Municipality of Athens and EKPA, which essentially satisfied the ongoing request of the educational community. Now, with this deal, opens the way for continuous maintenance, systematic restoration and promotion of school buildings, which are of great architectural value and have been located in Maraslio Didaskalio since 1905.

The joint initiative for today’s agreement between the municipality and EKPA was taken by Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis and EKPA Rector Thanos Dimopoulos. Thanks to this, the problem that is reflected in the housing and operation of the schools of the Municipality of Athens is solved for the benefit of students and the educational community: the 26th experimental gymnasium, the 26th lyceum of Athens, as well as the three experimental elementary schools and the 10th special school.

In a statement, the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, said: “A long-term dispute has finally come to an end. Students, teachers, professors and parents can now feel safe in their school. For his part, EKPA Rector T. Dimopoulos said: “The signing of a cooperation agreement between EKPA and the Municipality of Athens regarding the premises of the Maraslei Didaskalion is of particular importance. Thanks to the agreements signed today between EKPA and the Municipality of Athens, a number of issues regarding the use of the Maraslio Didaskalion buildings, which have been resolved for 25 years, have been resolved.

In addition, the future use of these buildings by the schools located in the Maraslio complex and other related issues have been agreed. At the same time, conditions are being created for further cooperation between EKPA and the Municipality of Athens.

It is noted that through the agreement, uninterrupted housing is provided for the 26th experimental gymnasium and the 26th lyceum, for which the municipality of Athens will now pay monthly rent to EKPA. At the same time, for the three pilot primary schools and the 10th special primary school located in the same area, their activities continue without any changes in the existing regime.

Contents of the Agreement

The agreement provides, among other things, that the three pilot primary schools and the 10th special school will continue to be housed in buildings owned by ECPA for the duration of their operation without any rent or compensation for use. .

At the same time, for secondary school and high school, monthly rent in favor of EKPA is provided by the Municipality of Athens, which has now been appointed as a tenant. In this capacity, the Municipality of Athens will now be able to take over the full maintenance and support of the schools, as is the case with all other school buildings operating in the municipality.
