One of the daughters of American activist Malcolm X announced on Tuesday that she has filed a legal notice that she plans to sue the FBI, CIA, New York Police Department (NYPD) and other US federal agencies and institutions over her father’s death. This is reported by Reuters and Agerpres.

Ilyasa Shabazz, one of the daughters of a prominent African-American activist, has accused several federal agencies and New York government agencies of fraudulently concealing evidence that they “conspired and carried out their plan to kill Malcolm X.”

“For years, our family has fought to uncover the truth about his murder,” Shabazz said at a news conference at the site where her father was killed, now a dedicated Malcolm X Memorial Center.

The New York Police Department said it would not comment on the ongoing litigation. The FBI and CIA have not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.

Who was Malcolm X?

Malcolm X rose to prominence as the national spokesman for the Nation of Islam, a religious and political organization of African-American Muslims that advocated black separatism.

He spent more than a decade in the Nation of Islam before becoming disillusioned with the organization and leaving in 1965, softening some of his initial views on racial segregation and angering some members of the organization.

The activist was threatened with death because of his decision. Malcolm X was 39 years old when three gunmen shot him on the stage of the Audubon Ballroom in New York, where the human rights activist was preparing to give a speech on February 21, 1965.

Shabazz, who was two years old at the time, was in the room with her mother and sisters. Shortly after, some of Malcolm X’s associates said that certain government agencies knew of the existence of a plan to assassinate the black leader and allowed it to be carried out.

Assumptions about the murder of an American activist

Talmadge Hayer, then a member of the Nation of Islam, testified in court that he was one of the three killers.

However, in 2021, a New York state judge acquitted two other men—Muhammad Aziz and Khalil Islam—who had been wrongly accused and spent decades in prison for killing Malcolm X, saying it was a miscarriage of justice.

Talmadge Hayer has long maintained that the two men were innocent and that his two accomplices were actually other members of the Nation of Islam.

Aziz and Islam were acquitted at the request of the Manhattan district attorney, who said the investigation found that prosecutors and federal agencies at the time withheld evidence that, if brought to trial, likely would have led to the acquittal of their men.

What compensation is the daughter of Malcolm X demanding from the authorities

In a notice filed by Shabazz in court, which under New York law must be sent to government agencies before a trial begins, activist Malcolm X’s daughter said she is seeking $100 million in restitution.

The notice was sent to the agencies she plans to sue Tuesday based on the newly discovered information, said her attorney, Ben Crump, who wants to take testimony from several employees of those government agencies.

“This is not just about the people who did the shooting, but about those who conspired with the aggressors to carry out this heinous act,” attorney Ben Crump said at the same news conference.

Ilyaza Shabazz plans to sue a long list of US agencies and institutions, including New York State, New York City Hall and the New York State Attorney’s Office, in addition to the CIA, FBI and NYPD, according to DPA.

Last year, New York City paid $26 million in damages and New York State $10 million to Muhammad Aziz and the family of Khalil Islam for wrongful imprisonment.
