“We want the people of Moldova to choose their freedom. Dear President Maia Sandu, we are proud to be with you. Please applaud Maya Sanda,” Joe Biden said in a speech hours after a scathing anti-Western message sent from Moscow by Vladimir Putin.

The US President’s message comes in the context of President Maia Sandu recently accusing Russia of planning a coup d’état in Chisinau.

Maia Sandu spoke about Russia’s plans to remove power from Chisinau a few days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced Moscow’s plan to destroy the Republic of Moldova.

John Kirby, the White House’s National Security Council communications strategy coordinator, said Monday that reports of an alleged Russian plot to topple the government in Chisinau are troubling and said Washington supports the government and people of Moldova.
